Richard Thompson is one of the most influential figures in folk rock history. As a teenager in the 1960s, he co-founded the groundbreaking Fairport Convention, helping create the distinctive sound of British folk rock. After leaving the band at just 21, he went on to form a celebrated musical partnership with his then-wife Linda Thompson before building a remarkable solo career that has spanned more than 30 years.
Thompson’s honors include an OBE, personally bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, lifetime achievement awards from BBC Radio 2 and the Americana Music Association, and the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. Rolling Stone named him one of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, while the Los Angeles Times called him “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix.”
His songs have been recorded by Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and many others. His classic “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923.”
