Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh- but smile no more.
From the 15th century to the mid-20th century, letterpress printing was the primary way that literature was connected with readers.
Dive into that material history with this hands-on class, which will cover the foundations of letterpress, from setting metal type to pulling prints. Participants will craft a collaborative and seasonally appropriate chapbook of Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry on an iron handpress.
Erica Honson is an artist, educator, and collaborative printer in Philadelphia. They teach printmaking and graphic design at Bucks County Community College and serve on the Board of Directors at the Soapbox Community Printshop and Zine Library. Erica has taught workshops at nonprofits, libraries, and local colleges and universities, and they facilitate live printmaking and papermaking activities in public spaces around Philadelphia. Erica received an MFA in Book Arts & Printmaking from the University of the Arts following a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
