This symposium examines sound and music in modern South India as contested terrain, where forms of cultural nationalism and shifting practices of inclusion and exclusion that emerged from the late 19th to the early 21st centuries have determined whose voices and musical practices were canonized as “classical music.”
Bringing together three deeply invested scholars and practitioners, this event reconsiders these political and cultural transformations and asks what is at stake—methodologically, historiographically and ethically—in developing a more capacious sense of the plural pasts of South Indian music. The event features South Indian vocalist and author TM Krishna, Prof. Davesh Soneji (South Asia Studies, University of Pennsylvania) and Prof. Amanda Weidman (Anthropology, Bryn Mawr College), moderated by Prof. Anna Schultz (Music and the Humanities, University of Chicago).
The symposium is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
